Artworks are on view now through July 2, 2022
(NORTH BETHESDA, MD)- This month, the Mansion at Strathmore is home to three collections exploring pastel, pivoting after life-altering circumstances, and reflecting on cultural and religious identity. All three exhibitions are on view through July 2 in the Mansion.
“In concert with the seasons (Spring and Summer), these exhibitions offer colorful interpretations of the world around us,” said Lesley Morris, Director of Exhibitions at Strathmore. “The pastel artists are masters of their mediums and both Terence Nicholson and Rashad Muhammad delve into subject matters that can be difficult to discuss, but we’re forced to examine how these last few years have changed our point-of-view in some way.”

EXHIBITION: PIVOT: TERENCE NICHOLSON
Sat. May 7– Sat. July 2, 2022
Terence Nicholson’s works are the product of, but not necessarily defined by, the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although he had no desire for the body of work to focus on the pandemic specifically, its impact was unavoidable.
Nicholson was challenged to continue the making of objects during a time of limited space due to social distancing mandates and calls to stay indoors during the early days of the pandemic. As a result, he created a series of works on plexiglass, photo transfer, and video as well as smaller assemblages.

EXHIBITION: SHADES OF PASTEL: MARYLAND PASTEL SOCIETY
Sat. May 7– Sat. July 2, 2022
The Maryland Pastel Society returns to Strathmore with their biennial juried exhibition featuring pastel artists from around the nation. Soft pastels have a high concentration of pigment, resulting in intense hues in an extensive range of colors from earth tones to vibrant shades. The Society is devoted to promoting the art of soft pastel and the professional development of pastel artists.
