Having spent his childhood traveling with his internationally touring parents, Brazilian jazz vocalist Kenia and trombonist Jay Ashby, Lucas Ashby’s experience of music has always consisted of a plethora of sounds, textures, rhythms, melodies, and cultural histories.
Ashby, a Brazilian-American multi-instrumentalist, has molded his work as a percussionist for world-renowned groups to a variety of genres including Afrofunk, jazz, Brazilian guitar, Ghanaian highlife, and more.
As a composer, Ashby continues to bend the boundaries of genre, working with 21st-century chamber ensemble Arco Belo to debut some of his experimental compositions. His projects often focus on the intersections of different musical and cultural perspectives and traditions, exploring everything from subjective interpretations of multiculturally-influenced postmodern jazz music to the fusion of early 20th century Brazilian music and modern jazz.

A Sneak Peek at The Patio Stage
A rendering of The Patio Stage at dusk. Tables seat 1–4 guests and are surrounded by 6 feet of space on all sides for your comfort. The covered space is open on 3 sides allowing for excellent airflow.
Guests will be seated a little further back from the stage than you may be used to, but there is not a bad seat in the house to experience energizing performances by outstanding artists. With state-of-the-art sound and lighting we’re ready to welcome a variety of artists!
The Patio Stage sits on the Trawick Terrace, just outside the lobby on the Orchestra Level of the Music Center. The venue is covered by a large tent with open sides.
