For the past decade, Rui Fu has researched minority music traditions in remote regions of China and incorporated vocal elements into her own impressionistic, and often improvised, singing. In this workshop, she shares research highlights, and introduces you to the regional cultures that gave rise to these distinctive vocal styles. With her knowledge of ancient music philosophy and Taoist aesthetics, Fu provides insight into the revivalist movement in Chinese music today.
This workshop includes live improvised performances with Chinese dulcimer player and AIR alum Chao Tian to demonstrate how history and tradition inform modern creativity.
