The mission of the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras is to nurture, develop and advance young talented musicians in a quality orchestral program.
The MCYO program creates a seamless connection between the artistic and the educational experience. MCYO now enjoys its first permanent home in the grand Music Center at Strathmore. MCYO is highly regarded regionally and nationally as one of the country’s most outstanding youth orchestra programs.
History
Founded in 1946 as the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra, MCYO is the oldest and most established youth orchestra program in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Since 2005, MCYO has been a resident partner in the beautiful and world class venue at the Music Center at Strathmore where it has been thrilling audiences with artistic performances from all age levels. Under the direction of MCYO Artistic Director Kristofer Sanz and MCYO Artistic Advisor Jonathan Carney, MCYO proudly ushers in its 79th season of providing a quality orchestra program for the area’s young talented musicians.
Our Home
The Music Center at Strathmore is regarded for having one of the most beautiful and acoustically desirable concert halls in the world. The center also boasts an education center with offices, studios, and rehearsal suites to support unprecedented partnerships between Strathmore, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Washington Performing Arts, National Philharmonic, Levine School of Music, and CityDance Ensemble.
Programs & Ensembles
MCYO offers four full orchestras, a chamber ensemble, four string orchestras, small ensembles and chamber music programs to over 600 talented musicians in grades 2-12. Auditions for MCYO are held annually in late August.

Kristofer Sanz
KRISTOFER SANZ has matured as a vibrant and talented conductor whose energy and fervor for music have allowed him to achieve a passionate, mature and musical sound with any ensemble he has conducted. Mr. Sanz recently has been praised for his modern and adventurous interpretations, as well as his contemporary and interactive concert presentations. He is the Artistic Director and Philharmonic conductor for the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras program that rehearses and performs at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland. Under Mr. Sanz’s baton the Philharmonic is quickly becoming known for their highly musical, moving, and nuanced interpretations of a wide range of works from all genres—including orchestral works, dance, and opera.

Artistic Advisor
Jonathan Carney
Jonathan Carney is the concertmaster at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra after 12 seasons in the same position with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Born in New Jersey, Mr. Carney hails from a musical family with all six members having graduated from The Juilliard School. After completing his studies with Ivan Galamian and Christine Dethier, he was awarded a Leverhulme Fellowship to continue his studies in London at the Royal College of Music.
