Museum Shop Holiday Market
Explore a wonderland of artsy gifts and support local nonprofits and cultural institutions: Nov 9-11, 2023.
by Paige Cross, Strathmore 2023 Summer Intern
An annual tradition, Strathmore’s Museum Shop Holiday Market kicks off the gift-buying season for shoppers while garnering support for local nonprofit museums and arts organizations.
Every year, the Mansion transforms into a winter-themed marketplace, complete with holiday concessions from Strathmore Culinary Arts. From stocking stuffers and puzzles to artwork and handcrafted jewelry, shoppers are sure to find unique gifts for loved ones of all ages. Over the years, a diverse range of vendors have participated in the Holiday Market, including the National Building Museum; Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens; and even the Supreme Court.
The Holiday Market is the brainchild of Mary Kay Harper, former executive director of the Montgomery County Historical Society. Thirty-five years ago, she proposed a collaboration with Strathmore to bring together museum shops from arts institutions around the Washington, DC area. Her vision was one-stop holiday shopping for arts-inspired and handmade gifts.
Today, the market is still thriving, with patrons returning year after year to celebrate the start of the holiday season. For Strathmore President and CEO Monica Jeffries Hazangeles, who does a volunteer turn at the front desk, it is a fun and nostalgic treat to welcome back best friends, parents and children, and neighbors to the Mansion.
We hope that you will make a new tradition with us this holiday season!
