CityDance Ensemble Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras interPLAY
The Grammy Award-winning Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is internationally recognized as having achieved a preeminent place among the world’s most important orchestras. Acclaimed for its uncompromising pursuit of artistic excellence, the Baltimore Symphony has attracted a devoted national and international following while maintaining deep bonds throughout the Maryland community through innovative education and community outreach initiatives.
The BSO will make musical history in September 2007, when Maestra Marin Alsop leads her inaugural concerts at the Orchestra’s 12th music director, making her the first woman to head a major American orchestra. Maestra Alsop’s concerts will mark the dawn of a new era for the BSO, as she brings her highly praised artistic vision, her dynamic musicianship and her commitment to accessibility in classical music to BSO audiences.
With the opening of the Music Center at Strathmore in February 2005, the Baltimore Symphony became the nation’s first major orchestra with year-round venues in two metropolitan areas. As the founding partner and resident orchestra of the Music Center, the BSO presents more performances than any other partner on campus.
The BSO at Strathmore is actively involved in giving back to Montgomery County and the Greater Washington, D.C. area, continuing the Orchestra’s 81-year history of high-quality education programs for music-lovers of all ages. In addition to mid-week education concerts, the BSO collaborates with the Levine School of Music and MCYO to present lecture series and master classes for area youth. Last season, the BSO at Strathmore launched its newest education initiative, BSO on the Go, which brings small groups of BSO musicians into local schools for free and interactive music education workshops. The 2007-2008 Season
With the BSO’s landmark 2007-2008 season, the inaugural season under the baton of Marin Alsop, the Orchestra continues its tradition of innovation and artistic excellence. Titled “The Year of the Composer,” the season features works by 9 of today’s most renowned contemporary composers, paired with six of Beethoven’s nine symphonies. From John Adams to Joan Tower, Tan Dun to Thomas Adès, each of the 9 composers will visit the BSO.
Throughout the 2007-2008 season, the Orchestra will undertake projects that will bring the music of the BSO to audiences around the world. Beginning on September 27, 2007 with a live broadcast of Marin Alsop’s inaugural concert, the BSO has partnered with XM Satellite Radio to air eight full-length concerts throughout the course of the season. The Orchestra continues its commitment to recording with work on a three-disc cycle of Dvořák’s Symphony Nos. 5-9 and the Symphonic Variations, all recorded under the direction of Marin Alsop. On February 2008, the BSO returns to Carnegie Hall for a program to include the New York debut of Steven Mackey’s percussion work Time Release, featuring Colin Currie. The program marks the BSO’s first performance at the venerable music hall under the directorship of Maestra Alsop.
